Description:
It is likely that disaster will strike your library or archives, disrupting services and causing damage to the collection and building. Is your institution prepared to handle both minor incidents and large-scale emergencies? Fire, smoke, flooding, burst or leaking pipes, and a host of other disasters can damage collections. To prevent unnecessary loss of materials, library and archives staff must be prepared to execute a salvage and response operation. This requires that staff is knowledgeable and experienced with salvage options and drying techniques.
Through discussion and hands-on experience, this class focuses on the initial response to a disaster. The first half of the class examines key issues in disaster recovery and emphasizes the skills and procedures necessary to execute a recovery operation, including techniques and options for water damage; air-drying books; separating and drying manuscripts, microforms, and photographic materials; rinsing muddy materials, and packing out wet items to send to a disaster recovery vendor.
The second part of this one-day class features a mock disaster recovery exercise where participants will apply the skills learned in the morning to pack out, sort, and make decisions about drying options for a large collection of water damaged books, records, photographs, and magnetic media.
Intended Audience:
This class is designed for staff members interested in gaining experience in the recovery and salvage of water damaged library materials.
