Description:

Public library and school media center circulating collections are subjected to a lot of wear and tear. Most libraries perform some minor repair on their damaged materials. Despite staff members good intentions, some materials and procedures used can shorten the useful life of the book, make it hard to open, and cause more problems for future usability. If done properly, however, book repairs are an effective way to keep materials available to patrons for a longer period.

This one-day class will teach staff how to minimize damage to collections by learning proper use, handling and storage of collections. Also covered are simple, economical repairs on materials in general circulating and reference collections. The session will focus on techniques that are most often needed in public libraries and school media centers and do not require expensive equipment and supplies. The class will NOT teach techniques for repairing materials that are special, rare, or archival. The following procedures will be taught in small-group modules through demonstrations and practice:

  • Tightening hinges when text blocks are pulling away from the cover
  • Replacing torn endsheets
  • Replacing torn or damaged spines
  • Mending paper
  • Tipping in pages into bound volumes.

Lectures and discussions will address preservation principles, preventative measures, treatment decision-making, and organizing equipping a repair unit.

Intended Audience:

Designed for public library and school library staff members who actually perform book repair. No prior preservation training will be presumed. These repairs are NOT appropriate for the academic library.
