Basic MARC Tagging for Serials Live Online

This class overviews original and copy cataloging of serials using the MARC format, focusing on how MARC tagging affects searching and OPAC record displays.

Description:

Learn the fundamentals of MARC coding and tagging for serials in many formats, including print and electronic. This class gives an overview of original and copy cataloging using the MARC format, focusing on how MARC tagging affects searching and OPAC record displays. Topics include applying MARC throughout the cataloging process, integrating MARC with cataloging practice, using MARC documentation, and applying specialized MARC tags for serials, including the use of linking fields. The session will be offered online in two-hour increments for two successive days. Hands-on exercises are included.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this class, participants will be able to:

  • Tag and code original cataloging for serials
  • Interpret and correct the tags on copy cataloging
  • Understand how MARC tagging affects bibliographic searching

Prerequisites:
Prior attendance at the following is recommended, but not required:

  • Copy Cataloging with OCLC Connexion Browser or Copy Cataloging with OCLC Connexion Client.
  • Interpreting the MARC Record.
  • General Principles and Practices of Cataloging

Intended Audience:

Cataloging or serials staff new to MARC tagging and coding for serials.

Prerequisites:

Strongly recommended: Prior attendance at Interpreting the MARC Record. Recommended, but not required: Prior attendance at Copy Cataloging with OCLC Connexion Browser or Copy Cataloging with OCLC Connexion Client.
