Description:

This two-hour live online presentation gives a basic orientation to cataloging -- its purpose, its goals, its terminology -- and the basics of where to start, what information is most important, the original cataloging process, and hints for copy cataloging. The class also overviews the MARC format and outlines helpful resources.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this class, participants will be able to:

  • Know why we catalog
  • Comprehend cataloging terminology
  • Understand the cataloging process
  • Recognize parts of the MARC record
  • Identify cataloging resources

Intended Audience:

Library staff unfamiliar with basic cataloging principles. We recommend that new cataloging staff take some of our more advanced cataloging courses, but this class will help anyone understand more about cataloging concepts.
