Description:
Libraries all over the world are creating new discovery tools to replace or compliment traditional online catalogs. Some want a better search interface for their patrons; others want to integrate existing resources into one search interface. A federated search tool can offer a single search interface, but one with inherent limitations. What other options are available? How can new technologies help to create new integrated solutions?
Learning Outcomes - at the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Describe the inherent limitations of federated search architectures
- Identify new technologies and tools available to library developers that may facilitate alternative solutions
- Explain how open-source tools are used by library developers
- Define questions for database vendors that help to evaluate their products and the ease with which they might be facilitate integration in a new discovery system
