Description:
Preservation has a place in libraries of all types to extend the useful life
of the collections and increase accessibility. Introduction to Preservation
emphasizes preventive measures and includes information on the elements of a
comprehensive preservation program, the nature of library materials, and the
mechanisms of deterioration. Discussions will also cover proper care and
handling practices, stack maintenance, staff and user education, and library
binding.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this class participants will be able to:
• Identify basic tenets of preservation and
collections care
• Understand the inherent and environmental
stresses on collections that will impact their longevity and usability
• Describe practical steps that can be
implemented to positively affect the collections in their care

Intended Audience:
Staff members interested in or responsible for preservation activities in libraries of all types.

This class is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities
(NEH) Division of Preservation and Access.
Registrations for this class must be received at least one week before the
class date. Registrants should receive an email offering detailed login and
setup instructions. Please call the Educational Services Department at

class. This course is designed for individual participation; each individual
must register.
