It was a momentous inaugural year for LYRASIS, now the nation's largest regional membership organization. Here are highlights of what we have achieved, working together this year:

  • Mass Digitization Collaborative now includes participants from New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeastern regions, making digitization affordable and easy while facilitating regional collection development
  • LYRA Resource Sharing Group is formed, representing a major increase in free lending opportunities for members.
  • Educational Services expands with new classes, instructors, and partnerships. Small leaf
  • TechSquad is created to provide members with on-site assistance with technical issues.
  • New partners and products are now available to members, bringing significant savings on nearly 1,000 products and services.
  • Expanded consulting services, with new areas of expertise and more consultants. A highlight is the addition of former NELINET CEO Arnold Hirshon who will serve as LYRASIS executive consultant.  LYRASIS also unveiled the new Library Strategic Planning Toolkit to assist libraries in their planning efforts.
  • Gulf Coast Library Project is on its way to completing goals for rebuilding 21 public libraries and anticipates the first permanant rebuilt library to open in February 2010 in Jefferson Parish, LA.
  • Innovation and Performance Team highlights include the re-launch of the Library Leadership Network on a Drupal platform; and the award of $192,000 Mellon Foundation grant for a pilot program in open source implementation.

PREMISPreservation metadata is information that supports and documents the digital preservation process, including ownership, authenticity, rights, and preservation activities. In short, preservation metadata makes digital objects self-documenting across time. The PREMIS (Preservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies) Data Dictionary describes a core set of preservation metadata elements and guidelines for implementation. The new live online class, Introduction to PREMIS, covers overview, history, and implementation of the standard and explores ways that PREMIS may fit into your institution's preservation strategy.

First New England Member Joins Mass Digitization Collaborative
College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine is the first New England member to join the LYRASIS Mass Digitization Collaborative. Jane Hultberg, director of the college's Thorndike Library, said:

"We are delighted to be working with LYRASIS to digitize materials, primarily from our archives. As a small college with limited staffing, it is a wonderful opportunity for us to participate in this well-planned, professional digitization program at a cost we can afford."
