Members Share Their Library's 2010 Accomplishments and Look Forward to 2011

We asked LYRASIS members (selected by random sampling) to share their accomplishments for 2010 and their plans for 2011. In the spirit of celebration of the important role of libraries in the world today and in hopes of a bright year ahead for your library, we are proud to feature a few of the innovative, dedicated members that make up LYRASIS.

What is your library's proudest accomplishment in 2010?

We have helped our public libraries assist people who are struggling

during this economic crisis by partnering with our Department of Labor & Workforce Development to provide training for librarians to assist Tennesseans with online unemployment paperwork and by giving LSTA-funded Direct Services Grants to establish job centers in public libraries.

What is your library looking forward to in 2011? One highlight will be our ongoing Civil War Sesquicentennial project, in which we send a team of archivists and conservators out to digitally copy and assist in the preservation of Civil War era artifacts privately held by Tennesseans, culminating in the creation of a virtual exhibit representing the rich Civil War heritage of Tennessee families.

What is your library's proudest accomplishment in 2010?

Two accomplishments. Renovating an entire floor of  Farley Library for the Alden Learning Commons which incorporates the Library, the Writing Center and The Teaching Commons (Center for Teaching and Learning). And, through a grant and soliciting gifts, adding the current Web of Science and the corresponding archive.

What is your library looking forward to in 2011?

Phase 2 renovation of main floor of the library and adding SAGE electronic journals collections.

Ginger Cain of Emory

Ginger Cain, Interim Director of Communications, Emory University

What is your library looking forward to in 2011? Even as we make long-range plans for a new Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library building, our burgeoning collections of archives, manuscripts, and rare books will benefit from a reallocation of existing library space and from creative design work in order to gain much needed square footage for stacks, services and staff.

What is your library's proudest accomplishment in 2010?

Our Born-Digital Archives staff devised a way to emulate Sir Salman Rushdie¹s writing environment and create an exact duplicate of his computer files for researchers to explore, resulting in the most complete full-immersion experience of a digital archive at any university so far and one that has generated media attention from The New York Times to the Huffington Post.
