Learn about LYRASIS Open Source Decision Support at ALA Midwinter
Do you find yourself trying to answer any of the following questions?
- Is open source software right for my institution?
- Do we have the necessary skills/support to run open source software?
- Would it be cheaper or more expensive to use open source software?
- What open source software package fits my requirements?
With the financial support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, LYRASIS Technology Services (LTS) introduces a new suite of tools to help you answer these questions. Available to LYRASIS members and non-members, the Open Source Decision Support suite provides self-guided readiness assessments to help you determine if open source software is right for your library, as well as a registry of software packages to help you find information about open source software service providers, events and usage by peers. With these free tools, librarians and technologists can determine the best approach to leveraging open source software.
To learn more, make plans to attend one of these two FREE sessions during ALA Midwinter:
- January 21st from 10:30am to 11:30am CST, City Center Marriott Somerset Room
- January 22nd from 10:30am to 11:30am CST, City Center Marriott Bordeaux Room
Not attending ALA Midwinter? We will be scheduling additional free, one-hour webinars in January and February. Details are coming soon.

Participants for the HBCU Photographic Preservation Project Selected
In partnership with The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts, The HBCU Library Alliance, and The Image Permanence Institute at the Rochester Institute of Technology, LYRASIS is sponsoring the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) Photographic Preservation Project. This project is Round 2 of an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded initiative aimed at improving the preservation of significant photographic collections held by HBCUs. Based on the significance and usage of the proposed collections, the conditions of the collections, and the capacity of the institution to support a project, the following ten institutions were selected to receive grants for preservation projects: Atlanta University Center - Robert W. Woodruff Library (GA), Bethune-Cookman University (FL), Bowie State University (MD), Fisk University (TN), H. Councill Trenholm State Technical College (AL), Hampton University (VA), Jackson State University (MS), Johnson C. Smith University (NC), Oakwood University (AL), and Tuskegee University (AL).
