Emergency Response Checklist


(Note: This checklist serves as a guideline only; not every step on this list is appropriate for every institution/emergency.)

____ Recognize and identify the type of emergency (fire, smoke, chemical, water, etc.).
____ Notify appropriate authorities (institution/emergency personnel/first responders/local emergency management agency).
____ Ensure that all staff and visitors are accounted for and are safe.
____ Activate your disaster plan.
____ Notify the disaster team.
____ Gain clearance to enter the building.

Assess and document (in writing and in photographs/video) the damage to your building/collections/information systems:

____ What areas have been affected?
____ How much of the collections have been affected?
____ What types of materials are damaged?
____ What hazards are there (sewage, electrical, debris, etc.)?
____ Are critical systems operational?
____ Is relocation of all/some of operations necessary?

____ Contact insurance company.
____ Gain access to emergency funds.
____ Develop plan of action.
____ Establish command post.
____ Procure necessary supplies.
____ Establish security measures.
____ Notify any additional personnel/volunteers.
____ Contact outside recovery service providers.
____ Eliminate hazards.
____ Stabilize the environment.
____ Coordinate communication with the media/public through public information office.
____ Coordinate/train response and salvage crews.
____ Begin salvage.
