This self-paced, web-based course introduces the MARC authority format and helps the student analyze several types of MARC authority records found in the OCLC Authority File: personal names, corporate and conference names, subject headings, uniform titles and subdivisions.

Description:

The Authority File keeps names, subject headings and uniform titles in a catalog at a certain established standard. This self-paced, web-based course introduces the MARC authority format and helps the student analyze several types of MARC authority records found in the OCLC Authority File: personal names, corporate and conference names, subject headings, uniform titles and subdivisions. The final lesson introduces methods for searching authorities in OCLC Connexion. Students are given a login and password, which gives them access to the course materials at any time for a period of three weeks.

Intended Audience: New catalogers, new cataloging staff, librarians unfamiliar with the structure and concepts of authority records and anyone wanting a refresher in using the Authority File.
