Staying on TRAC: Digital Preservation Implications and Solutions for Collaboratives

One of the significant barriers to the ability of collaborative digital initiatives to develop a long-term preservation program is a lack of educational opportunities. To address this need for education and training, Staying on TRAC: Digital Preservation Implications and Solutions for Collaboratives, was designed to bring together teams of individuals who have created digital collections and who now bear responsibility for the digital preservation of these collections.

Using CRL/OCLC Trustworthy Repositories Audit and Certification: Criteria and Checklist (TRAC) as its foundation, the three-day workshop will provide an introduction to digital preservation before focusing on planning, assessment and digital preservation solutions. LYRASIS will offer additional training and support after the workshop, enabling the collaboratives to complete their preservation plans, which may serve as models for other organizations in the field.

By increasing the number of digital collaboratives prepared to undertake the long-term accessibility of digital collections, the workshop will benefit cultural repositories—small and medium-sized libraries, museums, historical societies and archives—that lack the resources to develop their own digital preservation program.

The workshop is comprised of three related components: a webinar introduction, a two-day, in-person segment, and a series of post-workshop cohort activities. Through the combination of webinars, in-person sessions, and video/audio conferencing, the workshop will allow a maximum level of team participation at a minimal cost. To this end, the pre-workshop webinars are structured to enable all team members to participate. The two-day in-person workshop must be attended by at least one team member, and we strongly recommend that two or more team members attend. The post-workshop cohort activities, including webinars, may be attended by all team members.

Cost is $150 for the first member of a registered collborative team and $75 for the second. The fee covers the online and in-person sessions as well as workshop materials and post-workshop online activities.
