Digital Preservation Implications and Solutions for Cultural Heritage Institutions

Libraries and other cultural heritage institutions have been creating and acquiring digital content for more than a decade. Many digitization projects have been undertaken as collaborative efforts between two or more cultural heritage organizations. The "Staying on TRAC" workshop is targeted toward representatives from organizations who have acquired or created digital content and are now ready to address the issue of long term access to digital collections by partnering with other organizations. These partnerships can be existing or newly forming intra-or inter-institutional collaborative efforts for digital preservation.

Staying on TRAC emphasizes the role of collaboration in the preservation of digital content. A major goal of the workshop is to assist attendees in creating a digital preservation plan appropriate to their needs, preparing them for both the local and collaborative roles and responsibilities associated with digital preservation. The workshop will also help attendees assess currently available tools, systems and services.

Workshop Format
The workshop consists of three interrelated components:

    1. a webinar introduction (3, 2-hour segments);
    2. a two-day, in-person workshop; and
    3. 6 post-workshop webinars along with advice in completing the digital preservation plan.

    The workshop will begin with a general introduction to digital preservation before focusing on planning, assessment and digital preservation solutions. De facto guidelines and standards for digital preservation planning, analysis, and assessment such as the collaboratively developed CRL-OCLC-NARA Trustworthy Repositories Audit and Certification: Criteria and Checklist (TRAC) will be used as workshop tools. Digital preservation systems and services will be introduced during the workshop and discussed more fully during the post workshop webinars.

    Leveraging a combination of webinars, tutorial workshop sessions, and small discussion groups, Staying on TRAC enables a maximum level of team participation at a minimal cost. To this end, the pre-workshop webinars are structured to allow all team members to participate and replaces a full day of on-site instruction. The two-day in-person workshop must be attended by at least one team member, and we strongly recommend that two or more team members attend. The post-workshop cohort activities, including webinars, may be attended by all team members.

    Cost:
    Cost is $150 for the first member of a registered collaborative team and $75 for the second. The fee covers the online and in-person sessions as well as workshop materials and post-workshop online activities.
