Description:

This two-hour class will explore the connection between the theory and the best practice of strategic financial resource management. Topics include revenue models, types of budgets, internal controls, resource allocation, financial planning, and acquiring outside resources. Elements of leadership and strategic planning will be explored. New and seasoned librarians, as well as new managers, will gain a deeper understanding of the budgeting process.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this class, students will be able to:

Describe what a budget is and why it is important
Understand the various types of revenue streams received
Explain how a budget is developed, with a focus on the budget process and implementation
Understand and evaluate the institution’s current budget and how it may need to be amended
Recognize the connection between budgeting and strategic planning

Instructor: Sean Gaffney

Sean holds an MLIS as well as an MBA and has worked in a variety of corporate environments. He is currently Data Analyst for Frank Winston Crum Insurance Company (FWCI), a carrier of Workers’ Compensation insurance for small businesses nationwide. Prior to that role, Sean worked as an Analyst for PricewaterhouseCoopers and as Head Research Librarian for the Archer Daniels Midland Company.
In addition to his day job, Sean has been a member of the faculty of the School of Information at San Jose State University since 2008. Research interests include data analytics, financial management, project management and library administration. He holds the Certified Public Accountant designation from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation and Certified Management Accountant from the Institute of Certified Management Accountants.
