Employees and managers are often frustrated with the actions or inactions of people in their organization, and they do not know how to effect the desired changes. During this webinar participants will learn a few tips and techniques that all employees can use to improve communication and decision-making at any level in the organization. The methods presented in this webinar will not be a “cure-all” to improve every conflict, but you will learn some ways to interact more effectively in difficult situations with the employees you manage or supervisors who manage you.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this class, students will be able to:

Identify ways to scan the organizational landscape to better understand the culture
Recognize the skills needed for effective communication & decision-making
Identify ways to build a peer support network
Create solutions for interpersonal communication problems

Instructor

Dr. Sue Alman teaches courses in Interpersonal Communications and Marketing and Public Relations for Libraries at San Jose State University School of Information, and she has held a variety of positions at the University of Pittsburgh, University of Michigan, and different types of libraries. Her areas of specialization include interpersonal communication, marketing and public relations, group dynamics, and foresight and strategic planning. Residing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sue teaches, writes, consults, and is currently involved in an IMLS-funded investigation of the possible uses of blockchain technology in libraries and information organizations. Among her many publications, Crash Course in Marketing for Libraries, 2nd edition, provides librarians with the tools to promote their resources and services to users and non-users, and to become powerful advocates for increased library support.
