Cultural intelligence is the capability to function effectively across various cultural contexts (Ang & Van Dyne, 2008). It can be integrated with other forms of intelligence and applies to any cultural context (i.e., diversity initiatives, organizational culture, generational culture, gender culture, etc.). Within Part 2: “Cultural Intelligence: What it is and Why it Matters” participants learned about the cultural intelligence model. This class builds upon that session in further examining how we can apply cultural intelligence within our libraries and begin to see it in action. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own development plan based on their own assessment and begin developing action steps toward improving their own cultural intelligence.
Developing Cultural Intelligence Series Description
This 3-part series will offer participants the opportunity to learn how we can use cultural intelligence in order to ensure our biases and interactions do not influence judgments about others, as this directly affects a library’s inclusive work environment and the strength of the organizational culture.
Is your library serving an increasingly diverse community? Do you want to improve your interactions with and understanding of different cultures? Our cultural values influence our own biases and interactions, and our biases can then influence our interaction with others. Cultural awareness and understanding our biases are critical first steps towards improving our job performance; however, we cannot stop there. Awareness alone does not guarantee success; the ultimate question is how to take that awareness and put it into action by using cultural intelligence.
Cultural intelligence is the capability to function effectively across various cultural contexts (Ang & Van Dyne, 2008). Individuals and organizations that utilize and improve their cultural intelligence show more effective cross-cultural adaptability and decision-making, enhanced job performance, and improved creativity and innovation.

Demonstrate a culturally intelligent resolution
Create a cultural intelligence development plan

Cultural Intelligence Basic Plus Assessment: The CQ Assessment measures an individual’s capability for working and relating across cultures. This tool is designed to assess the four factors and 13 sub dimensions of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) as well as individual cultural value orientations. Personalized feedback reports compare CQ scores with the worldwide norms and include a personalized development plan.
Prior to the webinar, registrants will receive information on how to register and complete the Cultural Intelligence Basic Plus Assessment. Participants will be required to provide valid credit card information prior to completing the assessment. Cost to each participant: $25.00 This is an additional charge outside of the webinar cost.
Dr. Michele A.L. Villagran is based in the Los Angeles area and is an Assistant Professor with the San Jose State University iSchool focusing on cultural diversity. Her research focuses on diversity and social justice issues in library and information science and cultural intelligence phenomena within libraries. Additionally, Dr. Villagran serves as a CEO of CulturalCo, LLC consulting in areas of diversity & inclusion, cultural competency and cultural intelligence, emotional intelligence, and conflict management.
She is a certified advanced cultural intelligence facilitator through the Cultural Intelligence Center and a Conflicts Dynamic Profile consultant. Dr. Villagran has more than 25 years of information profession experience including work in both the public and private sectors.
Dr. Villagran earned her Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University with her doctoral work focusing on cultural intelligence. She also received a Master of Dispute Resolution and Certificate in Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine. At the University of North Texas, Dr. Villagran received her M.L.S. degree in Legal Informatics and M.B.A. in Strategic Management. Dr. Villagran holds offices and serves on committees in many professional associations in the library and information science, legal, dispute resolution and education fields.
It is recommended to take the optional cultural intelligence assessment prior to this course, if you did not take Part 2.
