In this course, attendees will learn how citation analysis and bibliometric research has changed in the past ten years and the common tools used in the age of Big Data. Resources covered include Scopus, Web of Science, USPTO, PsychInfo, and more. This course is the perfect introduction for librarians who are new to citation analysis and either want to conduct their own research in these fields or support researchers doing everything from text mining to advanced network science research. No programming knowledge or technical experience required; this is a beginner-level course.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this class, students will be able to:
Distinguish between the ways to query a large dataset: in the cloud using a GUI (generated user interface) or from a local server.
Understand the complex landscape of data querying and computational analysis tools used by a variety of disciplines in the “era of Big Data”.
Enhance your skills as a liaison for researchers who conduct bibliometric, science of science, history of science, or citation analysis research.
Participants with no prior programming experience will be prepared to participate in “Visualization Tools for Science of Science Queries” and “Using CADRE for Digital Humanities and Computational Social Science Research”
Instructor
Jaci Wilkinson is an Assistant Professor and the Head of Discovery and User Experience at Indiana University Bloomington Libraries. Jaci manage user research for IU Bloomington Libraries and her department is product owner of IUB’s Springshare applications (LibGuides, LibCal, etc.), the library website, IUCAT, and IUB’s discovery tool, OneSearch@IU (EBSCO Discovery Service).
In June 2020, Jaci became the project director of CADRE. CADRE (Collaborative Archive and Data Research Environment) is a cloud-based “science gateway to standardized text- and data-mining services for large datasets”. Funded by IMLS, CADRE seeks to provide libraries with a sustainable and affordable platform for researchers to share and analyze large scale bibliometric data.
