The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is an extensive index of peer-reviewed, open access journals from around the world, driven by a growing community, committed to ensuring quality content is freely available online for everyone. As a non-profit, community-led organization, DOAJ works to build an equitable and diverse scholarly ecosystem where trusted research can be accessed globally without barriers.

DOAJ is reliant on funding from libraries to maintain and develop its platform and to keep up with the increasing number of journals applying for inclusion. DOAJ makes it easy for libraries to integrate trusted open access journals and articles into their discovery systems and helps them to help their researchers identify quality open access publications venues. DOAJ also plays an important role in building a diverse and inclusive publishing ecosystem, supporting the development of Open Access standards on a global level and ensuring the discoverability of content from smaller publishers.

Open Access Journals Toolkit Add-On

The Open Access Journals Toolkit was launched by DOAJ and OASPA in 2023 as a trusted, community-led resource for new and existing open access publishers globally.

This comprehensive resource provides guidance on how to set up a journal, source funding, develop policy, as well as more technical considerations such as design, platforms and indexing. The toolkit is currently available in English and French, an Arabic translation is in progress, and a Spanish version planned. The toolkit was compiled and is maintained by an independent Editorial Board comprised of experts from across publishing and chosen to ensure diversity in geography, organisation type, publisher size and languages.

With the aim to promote transparency and inclusivity in scholarly publishing, the toolkit was designed as fully accessible and downloadable to meet the diverse needs of the global scholarly publishing community. The toolkit will continue to be updated by the Editorial Board as the open access publishing landscape develops, and any changes and updates will be highlighted on relevant pages and reflected in the downloadable version.

DOAJ and OASPA invite libraries to support the ongoing development and maintenance of the toolkit, to cover hosting, development and creation of one additional translation per year. Total costs are in the region of $35,000 per annum.

Project JASPER Add-On

JASPER (Journals are Preserved for Ever) was launched on World Preservation Day in 2020 as a response to new research that showed that many journals simply disappear from the internet, taking their published research with them. This is usually due to a lack of real understanding of why long-term digital preservation of the scholarly record is necessary; and no affordable access to a real long-term digital archiving solution.

DOAJ joined forces with CLOCKSS, Internet Archive, The Keepers Registry and PKP to provide a “pipeline” allowing the most vulnerable DOAJ-indexed journals to have their content preserved. A pilot project showed how much the initiative is valued and needed, and recent growth is organic as more and more journals hear about our work.

JASPER’s goal is to open up the pipeline to even more journals and allow other Keepers to connect to it. Funds are needed to support this work–for outreach, onboarding, and platform stability–as the cost of preservation increases as more and more content is preserved. Total costs are in the region of $ 50,000 per year.
