The journal encompasses a wide variety of methodological approaches to population research. Its geographic focus is global, with articles addressing demographic matters from around the planet. Its temporal scope is broad, as represented by research that explores demographic phenomena from past to present and reaching toward the future.

Demography needs the support of stakeholders - demographic research centers and departments, foundations, consortia, and libraries - to invest in a sustainable, community-based funding model to ensure the long-term viability of this journal. Participating organizations can choose to support open-access content at any of the following levels:
- Level 1/$4,000 and up
- Level 2/$2,000 to $3,999
- Level 3/$1,000 to $1,999
- Level 4/$500 to $999
Organizations may participate at the level that aligns with their budget and their assessment of the value of the journal for their community.
