Open Access Community Investment Program Pilot Participant: Environmental Humanities
Environmental Humanities and Duke University Press are participating in the
LYRASIS Open Access Community Investment Program (OACIP). The program's goal is to help match libraries, consortia, foundations, departments and other prospective scholarly publishing funders with non-profit publishers and journal editorial boards that are seeking financial investments to sustain or transition journals or books to Open Access (OA) publishing.
About Environmental Humanities
Environmental Humanities is a peer-reviewed, international, bi-annual, open-access journal. Rapidly establishing itself as the leading publication in the field, the journal publishes outstanding interdisciplinary scholarship that draws humanities disciplines into conversation with each other, and with the natural and social sciences, around significant environmental issues.
Environmental Humanities has a specific focus on publishing the best interdisciplinary scholarship; as such, the journal has a particular mandate to:
- Publish interdisciplinary papers that do not fit comfortably within the established environmental subdisciplines, and
- Publish high-quality submissions from within any of these fields that are accessible and seeking to reach a broader readership.
The field of environmental humanities continues its rapid growth and development. In order for the journal,
Environmental Humanities, to grow and develop, Duke University Press and the Editors want to plan to increase the journal’s frequency in 2022 from two issues per year to three issues per year, plus provide financial support to the journal’s editorial office (e.g., provide funds to pay costs for equipment and supplies as well as support a part-time administrative assistant or graduate student to help with author and reviewer correspondence, online peer review, etc., which would help to lighten the workload of the editors and improve the journal’s editorial workflow).
In 2016 Duke University Press (DUP) became
Environmental Humanities’ publisher and owner. Established in 1926 as a department of Duke University and reporting to the Provost Office, DUP is a full service, not-for-profit academic publisher. DUP supports scholars in doing what they are passionate about: learning, teaching, and effecting positive change in the world.
Investment Criteria
Each OACIP participant completes a standardized form which asks for the criteria that libraries and other investors require in order to make investment decisions. These criteria will provide transparency around issues important to investors in this space.

Funding Tiers
Participation is open to supporters worldwide.
Five-year commitments are being sought for annual contributions at any of the following levels:
- Level 1/$500
- Level 2/$1,000
- Level 3/Any amount above $1,000
Organizations may participate at the level that aligns with their budget and their assessment of the value of the journal for their community.
