ACM Transformative Model for Open Access Publication

Lyrasis and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) have partnered to offer ACM Open, an Open Access read-and-publish agreement available to all Lyrasis members and partner-affiliated institutions. Corresponding authors at participating institutions can publish articles in ACM journals, magazines, and proceedings as Open Access (OA) with no additional fees for a three-year fixed term. Authors retain copyright to their articles and can opt to publish using a Creative Commons license (default CC BY). ACM will also deposit copies of these new OA articles into institutions’ repositories for open sharing, including for non-corresponding authors. Library patrons will continue to have full read/subscription access to the content in the ACM Digital Library. OA publishing is unlimited and pricing is fixed during the term of the agreement.

Pricing Tiers

ACM Open pricing tiers are based on the average number of each institution’s affiliated corresponding authored peer-reviewed research articles published in ACM Digital Library over the past three years. ACM is transparent about its Open pricing tiers. Read more: https://libraries.acm.org/acmopen

The ACM Open model transforms the pricing structure for ACM Digital Library, transparently shifting a greater proportion of costs toward institutions that publish more scholarly articles with ACM. Hence, “publish” institutions may see pricing increases under ACM Open, while “read” institutions’ prices will decrease over time. Learn more about the model by viewing this Lyrasis webinar recording.

Participating Institutions

More than 80 academic and special libraries nationwide participate in ACM Open through Lyrasis—nearly 1/3 of all participating institutions in the United States! They include top research institutions, liberal arts colleges, regional universities, and even a national laboratory, signaling the broad benefits of the Open model. These 80 institutions publish more than 200 scholarly articles with ACM per year.

How ACM Open Impacts You

  • All Lyrasis subscribers are eligible to join a three-year transitional agreement to full OA for ACM Digital Library starting on July 1 or January 1 each year. Libraries have the option to join at any time; pricing will be prorated and previously paid subscription fees will be credited toward the ACM Open price.
  • For now, switching to ACM Open is optional for higher-publishing institutions. ACM will require all subscribers to switch to the Open model in 2025.
  • To switch to ACM Open or request pricing information, please contact membersupport@lyrasis.org.

Lyrasis has negotiated a central license with best in class terms. Participating institutions placing new orders will be asked to agree to abide by the terms at that time.
